Artificial Intelligence in daily life: Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is the hippest trend technology in digitalization. Eight examples make it clear that, unnoticed, it has found a permanent place in our everyday life in many variants and areas.
AI systems can now improve operating states or predict errors and malfunctions based on data and algorthms – for example in production processes, in the power grid and in logistics. The companies hope that this will result in more productivity and less downtime. “Artificial intelligence is rapidly conquering factories,” said Bitkom President Achim Berg at the start of the Hannover Messe. According to a study by the industry association , every second company now believes that machine learning will change current business models in the long term.
But not only industry has discovered the topic for itself: China wants to become a superpower in the field of AI by 2030. To this end, the Chinese government has initiated funding programs worth billions. Not without reason! Because, according to a McKinsey study , AI alone can increase global gross domestic product by 1.2 percentage points per year by 2030. The additional value added contribution could be up to $ 13 trillion.
Many judgments, even more prejudices
No wonder that everyone is currently talking about AI. Even if most don’t know exactly what AI is, or define each AI differently. There are also many different types of game. Under artificial intelligence, scientists include automatic image recognition, natural language generation, virtual assistants (chatbots), robot-based process automation (RPA) and machine learning .
The question of where does a (simple) algorithm end (in the sense of a firmly defined sequence of actions: if A, then B), where does real artificial intelligence begin, can be argued excellently. For some, AI is the next big thing that can develop the world in a positive way. Others are afraid of too intelligent machines and would like to stop this development. In short: There are many judgments and even more prejudices regarding AI.
Eight examples of artificial intelligence in everyday life
From a very sober perspective, we already encounter forms of AI in everyday life – and often without even realizing it or thinking about it. It supports us with simple tasks, gives us tips and recommendations, and makes our lives easier and more comfortable in many areas. Sometimes it works better, sometimes with room for improvement. I have put together eight examples from everyday life here. It is deliberately not about cool, new innovations, but about things that are already there. They show that fear of contact with AI is actually out of place.

1. Language assistants
Probably the most widespread form of AI can be found in the area of speech recognition and speech assistance . Although Alexa, Siri , Cortana & Co. are still making mistakes, you can quickly see that these AIs are getting smarter all the time. Through machine learning, the language assistants recognize certain patterns in stored data in order to be able to give increasingly precise answers or to execute commands. It starts with setting an alarm clock with a voice command, goes to information about the weather, television program or the football results of your favorite club and does not stop when you call for flights or hotels.
2. Smart Home – Artificial Intelligence in daily life
In the smart home you can adjust the lighting conditions and temperatures using voice control, have coffee brewed automatically and close the roller shutters. But only with another form of artificial intelligence does the ‘home’ become really smart, because this AI is constantly learning. As soon as it has been fed with enough data about the residents, the AI automatically adjusts the temperature or lighting according to preferences.
3. Music streaming – Artificial Intelligence in daily life
What many dismiss as a simple algorithm can actually be described as a form of AI, depending on how broad the term is. Music suggestions from Spotify & Co. arise because a “weak” AI collects information about the musical taste of the user (Aha, Ferri likes to listen to the Beatles!) And the system learns every day, opens up new patterns and thus individually tailored ones Designs playlists. So if you next find a new favorite song through the browse or radio function of a streaming app, you can thank the AI that chose this song for you. 😉
4. Facebook feed and ads
Another example of a clever AI algorithm: Facebook recognizes who is really good friends with whom through certain clicks, habits, contacts and other data. That is why good friends often appear higher up in the news feed or are first displayed in the friends list in their own profile.
But AI isn’t the only thing Facebook uses to optimize users, because in principle all social media platforms – including LinkedIn, of course – use the potential of intelligent technology. AI also draws conclusions as to which posts or advertising could be of particular interest through the “Like” information, “Likes” or “Following” options. For example, advertising companies use the technology to target products (sports shoes, smartphones, lawnmowers) – often without the end user being aware that an AI is involved.
5. Language translation
Anyone who has recently used Google Translate, DeepL or similar programs knows that a lot has happened! While earlier words were translated incoherently, the new Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) first analyzes the entire sentence in a matter of seconds before suggesting a translation. Because the words are now related to each other, sentences can (largely) be translated accordingly. For example, idioms or specific expressions that are not the same in both languages are now recognized and processed correctly.
Even those who have not yet actively used Google Translate have already come into contact with it, for example by clicking on the “Translate” option under a different-language Facebook post or in the message field of many websites. Wikipedia also announced at the beginning of the year that it would integrate Google Translate, which means that the text or extracts from the text in front of it could have been written or translated by an AI.
6. Image creation / recognition
Capturing and correctly evaluating image content is probably the most mature skill in the AI field. This can be found, for example, in almost every smartphone : adjusting lighting conditions, automatic focus on a face, triggering the camera when you smile, waving when you want to switch on the timer. So if you own a smartphone, you may be relying on an AI to snap pictures. Image creation / recognition does not only refer to the perfect snapshot, but can do much more, as the next example shows.
7. Assisted driving
The autonomous vehicle on our roads is still a dream of the future, but there are already some functions that make driving significantly easier: the distance controller, emergency brake assist, automatic traffic sign recognition or automatic parking aid. Whose car is equipped with one of these systems clearly has an AI on board – after all, the car or the AI must be able to correctly assess the situation. After all, a plastic bag on the street is no reason for an emergency stop and a round shadow is not always a stone that you could bump into when parking.
If traffic signs – for example speed limits – are recognized, the AI performs just as well in image recognition as in processing. Even at high speeds, these AIs are reliable companions on the streets and may even avoid one or the other speeding ticket. 😉
8. Navigation – Artificial Intelligence in daily life
To stay in the traffic area: It is also worth taking a look at Google Maps and other navigation systems such as Apple’s map function. Real-time information – traffic jams, construction sites, road closures etc. – is analyzed and interpreted here by AI systems to warn of delays or to determine the best alternative routes. In the ideal case, it means: free travel thanks to AI!
And the development continues steadily: on the basis of statistical data, AI computers can recognize patterns more and more effectively and thus diagnose diseases that even experienced medical professionals are often unable to discover so quickly. AI systems increasingly write game reports in sports or the annual reports of commercial companies – where it is about fact-based texts. AI will also develop its potential in the analog hairdressing trade in the future: Schwarzkopf has already developed a scanner that recognizes the hair structure and can therefore recommend personal dyes and shampoos.
Artificial Intelligence in daily life systems are very specialized
Everyone has to decide for themselves whether they find this AI help good and useful. Where he wants to use it and where he doesn’t. But I think the examples show that artificial intelligence is not witchcraft and is still very specialized today. In most cases, she is really good at one topic, but everyone else is (almost) not at all. And in the long term, there is no system that can be dangerous to humans as an all-rounder acting independently. Most scientists agree on that.
My opinion: We should not demonize AI unnecessarily, but deal with it openly and take advantage of the opportunities this digital technology offers us in everyday work and private life. Of course, always with a sense of proportion and responsibility – and without completely ignoring the risks. We need clear rules for the use of AI and a global understanding that people are always the most important. And we have to see where it creates real added value for us and where it doesn’t.
Guidelines for responsible scope necessary
At Telekom we have already created guidelines for this . After that, AI should always support people and expand their skills instead of restricting them. We also live life in practice: In our customer service, for example, we have software robots support us for routine tasks in the back office, copy customer data or send customer information automatically – by email or SMS. This takes the pressure off our customer advisors and gives them more time for more complex inquiries in personal customer discussions. So customers and employees benefit equally at the end of the day. That also applies to ours digital assistant, an intelligent chatbot that automatically answers frequently asked questions about our products and tariffs around the clock via our website or MeinMagenta app. This is also a welcome addition, but not a substitute for our flesh and blood employees. Because people with their experience and empathy make the difference in service!
If we all – from America to Europe to China – agree that we have to deal responsibly with the AI topic and that the benefit for people is paramount in all developments, then we can have the great potential that AI still offers us , for the benefit of all. As always, the same applies here: proceed with empathy and tact. Think digital, steer empathetically. The machine should always serve people, they are and remain the most important.
