What is Giloy or Gulancha?

Giloy is an herb known as Tinospora cordifolia. Giloy is originally from India and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic Medicine, the traditional herbal medicine system of India. In Hindi, Giloy is also known as Giloya or Guduchi.

How are Giloy plant looks like?

Giloy’s plant is actually a shrubbed vine that means vine, dense forest, home garden, trees planted in the ground, where Giloy vine makes its home naturally. The thickness of its vine is equal to a finger, after drying it is used as a medicine in powder form. It can be seen spreading on neem and mango trees etc. Its leaves are smooth and betel-shaped. Its vine is yellowish white in color. And when it gets old, it becomes thick, it never dries or gets destroyed and after cutting it, a new creeper is born from it again. It climbs with the help of a tree and spreads on it.

Its root is white in color. It is soft and juicy and has strong aromatic odor. Many other tender small roots are also present at its nodes.

The stem of Giloy is green, fleshy and its inner part is circular. It has a thin bark of brown or ash-like color on its stem. As the stem gets old, it bursts. The new stem is green and soft, while it becomes brown and white spots when the stem becomes old. This is the most important part.

Giloy leaves

Giloy leaves develop in a particular sequence and are shaped like heart or betel leaves. The upper surface of the leaf is dark green while the lower surface is light green. In excess of water, the size of the leaves is large. The developed leaves are 3-5 inches in length and about 3-4 inches in width. The leaves are attached to the main stem by long branches. The main vein of the leaf is clean and thick. And the lateral veins are thin. Its leaves fall in the fall.
