Why do you celebrate Mahashivaratri?

According to mythological and religious beliefs, the festival of Mahashivaratri is celebrated for three reasons, in which the marriage of Shiva-Parvati is most prevalent. For this reason, Shiva processions are also taken out at night in many places on Mahashivaratri. Mahashivaratri is celebrated for three reasons:

1. Shiva-Parvati Marriage

Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva were married on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. This date is celebrated as a celebration of the Mahamilan of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. It is more important than the marriage of Shiva-Parvati on Mahashivaratri.

It is said that on this day he is pleased to worship Lord Shiva soon. There is also a belief that by observing the fast of Mahashivratri, the obstacles coming in the marriage are removed, the marriage happens soon.

2. Mahadev’s Shivling form

According to mythological beliefs, on the day of Mahashivaratri, the god appeared in his Shivling form. Then Brahma ji and Lord Vishnu first worshiped him in a systematic way. Due to this, there is a law to worship Shivalinga especially on Mahashivaratri.

3. Overcoming the world from distress by poisoning

It is said that by drinking the poison emanating from the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva saved this world from crisis, due to which Maha Shivaratri is celebrated. Lord Shiva’s throat was turned blue due to drinking poison emanating from the ocean churn, due to which he is also called Neelkanth.

Difference between Shivaratri and Mahashivaratri

The Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha of each month of the Hindu calendar is called Shivaratri, it is popularly known as the monthly Shivaratri. The Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month is known as Mahashivratri.
