1. Rinse or spit?

2. Choose the correct toothpaste

Any toothpaste that contains fluoride is recommended, but for those who have some kind of sensitivity, there are specific products that will help. “Anyone who has just had a whitening treatment may want to use a toothpaste with a whitening function to help prolong the effects,” said the clinical director.

3. Electric or manual?

If you’ve seen those electric toothbrushes and are unsure whether they can really replace the traditional ones, don’t worry. Preddy explains that the goal of brushing your teeth is to remove plaque and both will do that, but electronic brushes will make this job much easier.

However, he warns, “It’s a good idea to talk to a dentist or hygienist about the correct way to use the electric toothbrush for best results.”

Noting that bad breath continues, even with regular brushing, may be an indication that there is a more serious problem. For Preddy, normally bad breath is caused by an accumulation of bacteria in the mouth and this can be a consequence of a number of factors, including gingivitis, – where the gum separates from the tooth, leaving more space for the bacteria to grow – rough tongue that retains bacteria, and other oral infections.

There are other complications, such as gastric reflux and stomach problems, that may contribute to making your breath not so pleasant.

“Smoking, drinking alcohol and drinking coffee can also cause bad breath, as well as stain your teeth. To avoid this discomfort, brush your teeth frequently, make mouthwashes, go to your dentist regularly”, guides the clinical director.

For the specialist, bleeding gums is a sign of gingivitis, which is usually caused by an accumulation of plaque on the teeth. “The good news is that there is treatment, if it is detected in the early stages of the disease.”

This is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque or tartar, which irritates and causes them to bleed. For treatment, the specialist indicates a professional cleaning with a dentist and maintaining good oral hygiene at home.

Sensitivity is caused by the food and drinks consumed. “There are a number of reasons for having sensitive teeth, including an acidic diet, lots of fruits or fizzy drinks. Brushing your teeth too hard or tapping them together can also help increase sensitivity,” Preddy explains.

The tip for those with this problem is to consult a dentist and try to use toothpaste specific to this problem.

8. Sugar x teeth

“We all know that sugary foods are bad for your teeth because they can cause decomposition. What is not so well known is that, no matter how much sugar you eat, but how often you do it,” warns the expert.

Preddy further adds that at every meal, the bacteria already present in the teeth produce acids that cause tooth decay and this happens for about half an hour. It is therefore important to try to limit the intake of sugar in foods between meals.

9. Cut carbonated drinks

Soft drinks and flavored waters contain certain acids that over time can damage your teeth. “Diet drinks are also bad for teething, so it’s best not to drink them all the time,” said the dentist.

10. There is no age to start going to the dentist

“It is a good idea for parents to bring their children in their dental appointments so that the child gets used to the dental procedures and the dentist”, encouraged Preddy. On these occasions, the dentist can take a quick look at the child’s teeth, or gums (if the baby has not yet developed teething), and can help parents with tips.

Another precious ally: the sodium bicarbonate which you apply to your toothbrush (without toothpaste, so as not to obtain an excessively abrasive mixture), will allow you to find a whiter smile. Again, don’t overdo it, and just use it once a week.
